Ken Young 1941 - 2008 Kenneth James Gilmour Young was born in Toronto, Ontario on the 16th September 1941. He grew up in Ontario. He married Jeanne Elizabeth Leng and was father of seven children. After taking his teacher education at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah and Hamilton Teachers College in Hamilton, Ontario Ken started his teaching career with the Grey County Board of Education and stayed in Grey County until his retirement. He volunteered with the Grey County Elementary Teachers’ Federation, and was the winner of the Dick Aspinal Award for teaching (1994). He was the director of Alexandra Community School. The Owen Sound Parks and Recreation Committee and the Canadian Cancer Society “Cops for Cancer” fund raiser campaign benefitted from his volunteer service. Family History and Genealogy was Ken’s passion. He volunteered both locally and provincially with the Ontario Genealogical Society and continued to be on the executive of the Bruce Grey Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society even after he retired to Lethbridge, Alberta. He returned to Ontario to speak at the Fall Conference in Durham, Ontario in October 2007. In 2005 Ken became the president of the Lethbridge Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society and held the position until his death. He was the author of various genealogical research aids and genealogical articles. He was the Ontario Strays Co-ordinator. In 1995 Ken received the “Citation of Recognition” from the Ontario Genealogical Society in recognition of his contribution to the Society and to the cause of genealogy in Ontario. Ken was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was the Director of the Family History Center in Owen Sound for fifteen years and when he came to Lethbridge he volunteered at the Lethbridge Family History Center. |
